CHAPTER FIFTEEN

BRUNO

Never had time slunk along so slowly. Each of the three days until the full moon waned had felt like twenty at least. Bruno understood that the timing of the full moon was partially fortuitous since a werewolf’s healing was more accelerated while they were in their wolf forms, but if the full moon hadn’t risen when it had, Naya wouldn’t be in the awful shape she was. She might have actually made it to the bottom of that insane cliff. He still couldn’t believe she’d made as much progress as she had. Her fellow pack wolves hadn’t been exaggerating when they said she was one of the foremost rock climbers in the world.

But, like everything else about her, Naya’s skill was secret. He wanted to unearth every one of her mysteries. To excavate her world. To join together and make it theirs. In a hurry to learn everything about her, he’d familiarized himself with every one of her silvery spots, the exact shape of her muzzle, and the precise pitch of her growl when she’d come awake after the tranquilizer.

Then, while running his hands along her fur, he’d spent the rest of the flight back to the Rocky Mountain Pack’s land in the Moonlit Mountains, Colorado, talking with Albacus and Mordecai, who grew odder and more interesting with every new fact Bruno discovered about them. Even groggy and in great pain, Naya seemed to follow their conversation.

She could be reading his thoughts, an invisible presence filtering through his mind; or she could be influencing his thoughts, injecting her ideas into his consciousness so that he believed them to be his own—she could even be having full-on conversations with him, where Maverick answered her without his knowledge. Every possibility made Bruno’s skin crawl.

This immortal was the worst of news from every angle they examined her.

Though Mordecai and Albacus seemed unreasonably excited at the challenge she presented, they hadn’t yet arrived on a foolproof way to take her out. Bruno was certain of it; he checked on them nearly as often as he checked on Naya, and he’d barely left her side. But Naya was sleeping again, and Maverick had evicted whatever shifter usually occupied the cabin on the other side of Naya’s, giving it to the wizards while they were there. Maverick hadn’t said, since he was locked up in his own cabin to the left of Naya’s, continuing his self-imposed isolation, but River had suggested the alpha wanted the mages nearby in case Cassia should get past their many defenses and surprise them.

Now that Bruno had passed on the mantle of leadership to River, as Maverick wished, his priority was Naya. He got her food and water; he slept at her side on the bed, atop the duvet.

They hadn’t yet bonded as mates—that would require a
